Goal: $5,000.00
Specific Need
Dehumidifier
The dehumidifier if $45,000 and then the rest is do electrical work. We are maxed out on the electrical box.
Our dehumidifier for the house is managed by turning down the temperature. We keep the temperature about 65 degrees and we want the humidity to be below 51 percent. Dehumidifiers are essential for maintaining the ideal humidity levels necessary for the preservation of priceless items in the museum
By maintaining constant and ideal humidity levels, dehumidifiers actively seek to prevent mold development, rot, and other types of damage. Dehumidifiers establish a steady climate that guards sensitive artifacts from moisture-related deterioration by decreasing excess moisture in the air. By using this preservation strategy, objects live longer while retaining their aesthetic and historical worth.
We have signed books by Amelia Earhart, Muriel Morrisey, and Edwin Earhart to name a few artifacts that need preserving.
Mission
To restore the Amelia Earhart Birthplace to the time period of her life when she was in the Atchison home and to portray her life and the lives of other women aviators through educational and interpretative exhibits, activities, and events.
Profile
Brief History: Construction of Amelia Earhart's birthplace and childhood home, located at 223 N. Terrace, initially began in 1861. The wood-frame, Gothic Revival cottage is perched high on the west bank of the scenic Missouri River.
Amelia was born in the home on July 24, 1897 to Edwin Stanton Earhart and Amy Otis Earhart. Despite living in many different cities, Amelia considered Atchison her hometown, having spent more of her life in the Otis home than anywhere else. The Amelia Earhart Birthplace represents the most tangible remaining link with the famous female aviator.
Dr. Eugene J. Bribach of Atchison, contributed $100,000 to The Ninety-Nines, an International Organization of Women Pilots (to which Amelia not only belonged, but also served as their inaugural president) to assist with the purchase and maintenance of the home.
Dedication: The Ninety-Nines, Inc. and the citizens of Atchison, Kansas dedicate the Amelia Earhart Birthplace to this generation and future generations as a museum. We will continue to restore and preserve the home to the period when Amelia lived here, and to portray her life and those of other women aviators.
